R-11-89 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF COLTON OPPOSING THE <br />CLOSURE OF NORTON AIR FORCE BASE AND ENCOURAGING <br />THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF COLTON TO CONTACT <br />THEIR ELECTED OFFICIALS IN WASHINGTON, D.C., AND <br />EXPRESS THEIR CONCERN AND OPPOSITION TO THE CLOSURE <br />OF NORTON AIR FORCE BASE. <br />WHEREAS, the Base Closure Commission's report to the <br />Secretary of Defense and to the House and Senate Armed Services <br />Committees has recommended, in effect, the closure of Norton <br />Air Force Base, San Bernardino, California; and <br />WHEREAS, San Bernardino County has been dealt a doubly <br />devastating blow by the recommended closure of both Norton Air <br />Force Base and George Air Force Base; and <br />WHEREAS, neither the Department of Defense, the Congress, <br />nor any Federal Agency prepared an economic study of the poten- <br />tially serious adverse impact that the closing of Norton Air <br />Force Base would have on the San Bernardino area; and <br />WHEREAS, the closure of Norton Air Force Base would, <br />at a minimum, result in major short-term revenue losses to the <br />City of San Bernardino in a time of austere budget constraints, <br />seriously impacting our ability to serve the remaining residents <br />of our City; and <br />WHEREAS, the projected annual savings from all of the <br />Base closures is only a fraction of a percent of the national <br />budget; and <br />WHEREAS, only American jobs are affected by the recom- <br />mended closures. No consideration was given to closing overseas <br />bases. No consideration was given to shifting the economic <br />burden of operating bases in allied countries with strong economie <br />1 <br />
