CITY OF COLTON <br />FIRE BATTALION CHIEF <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general direction of the Fire Chief, direct, coordinate and supervise the activities and <br />operations of an assigned shift and any major operational area such as Training, EMS, <br />Ambulance, Communications, Maintenance or Personnel; coordinate divisional activities with <br />other Fire divisions, departments and outside agencies or organizations; establish division goals, <br />objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with the department and City's mission <br />statement and goals; and provide professional, administrative and technical support to the Fire <br />Chief, may assume command of the Fire Department in the Fire Chiefs absence. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Fire Battalion Chief is the supervisory level class responsible for managing and supervising <br />an entire shift of fire fighting personnel. This classification is distinguished from the next lower <br />classification of Fire Captain by the supervising of a shift of personnel rather than a single engine <br />company. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />Exercises direct and functional supervision over professional, technical, clerical and/or volunteer <br />staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Accept management responsibility for activities, operations and services of an assigned shift <br />including the areas of fire prevention, fire suppression, training, inspections, investigations, <br />emergency medical aid and transport services. <br />• Oversee and/or participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of the shift <br />goals, objectives, policies and procedures; ensure that divisional goals are achieved. <br />• Plan, coordinate and review work schedules with other department operational areas, other <br />City departments and outside agencies. <br />• Assign materials and equipment in order to achieve maximum efficiency in response time; <br />provide administrative and technical direction to shift personnel. <br />• Coordinate the selection, orientation, training and evaluation programs for shift personnel; <br />provide or coordinate staff training; identify and resolve staff deficiencies; fulfill discipline <br />procedures. <br />• Make periodic personnel inspections and general inspections of vehicles, apparatus and fire <br />stations. <br />• Oversee and participate in the development of the department budget; participate in the <br />forecast of necessary funds for staffing, materials and supplies; discuss and resolve budget <br />issues with appropriate staff; implement adjustments as necessary; monitor and administer <br />the budget. <br />• Propose, present, and justify programs, projects, operations and services. <br />• Develop a strategy and work plan for the successful achievement of program and project <br />goals. <br />• Serve as a resource for shift personnel and other Fire Department personnel. <br />
