CITY OF COLTON <br />FIREFIGHTER MEDIC <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general supervision of the Fire Captain, perform the full array of duties assigned to the Firefighter Medic <br />class including responding to all calls for life support, fire suppression and fire prevention; demonstrate a full <br />understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally <br />assist in the training of lower level Firefighter positions; perform a variety of other tasks in support of assigned area <br />of responsibility. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Firefighter Medic is the journey level class primarily responsible for responding to fire alarms, providing life <br />support at emergency scenes and protecting life and property endangered by fire; This classification is distinguished <br />from the next lower classification of Firefighter by the performance of medical and life support duties. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />May occasionally exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level Firefighter staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Perform the full array of duties assigned to the Firefighter Medic classification including the provision of <br />medical aid and life support at an emergency scene and perform fire suppression and fire prevention duties. <br />• Provide full range of medical aid and life support at an emergency scene; may perform victim extrication; and <br />interact with hospital personnel. <br />• Test and maintain medical and rescue equipment and drug inventory. <br />• Perform the full range of duties assigned to the Firefighter series at a fire scene such as responding to alarms, <br />hooking lines to hydrant, laying lines of hose, making initial attack, directing streams of water, carrying and set- <br />ting up ladders, ventilating buildings, performing search and rescue, administering first aid, and mopping, <br />sweeping, and cleaning after fires, and performing salvage and overhaul; may participate in fire investigations of <br />cause and origin. <br />• Test, wash, polish and service fire apparatus and equipment; test, wash and hang hose. <br />• Drill with engine company members; attend special training sessions on fire fighting and prevention techniques; <br />study City layout and water systems. <br />• Participate in engine company fire prevention inspections of local businesses and companies. <br />• Participate in station maintenance and upkeep. <br />• Participate in department public education program regarding fire prevention. <br />• Prepare reports and documentation related to paramedic and fire suppression calls. <br />• Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned <br />duties. <br />• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve <br />complaints. <br />• Perform other related duties as required. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS: <br />Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, <br />bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily <br />duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. <br />The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. <br />Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. <br />The incumbent may work around or in contact with hazardous materials, blood products and other potentially toxic <br />substances. Incumbent may be subject to physical threats, verbal abuse, or other stressful situations. During fire <br />suppression activities, incumbent wears self-contained breathing apparatus and enters smoke filled buildings. <br />QUALIFICATIONS: <br />
