ITEM #3
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
1 -UK UUUNUIL MLL I INU Vr .lune o, Luuv
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: DARYL PARRISH, CITY MANAGER
SUBJECT: APPROVE RECRUITMENT AND RATIFICATION OF ONE EMPLOYEE
APPOINTMENT TO THE PART TIME POSITION OF EXECUTIVE
ASSISTANT IN THE CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE
DATE: May 29, 2006
BACKGROUND:
The City Manager's office is requesting recruitment for a part time Executive Assistant due to the
current Executive Assistant's desire to decrease her work hours and increase the number of hours
spent with family. The City Manager's office wishes to pursue a job -sharing position in order to
maintain the current level of office support to the department.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Changes of the past few decades have resulted in an increasing need and the opportunity for
employers to provide alternative work arrangements. Recognizing the challenges of balancing
work and personal responsibilities, the City offers an alternative work arrangement option
designed to assist full-time regular employees in balancing personal and family needs with job
requirements.
The City wishes to continue to provide an environment conducive to the needs of families. Job -
sharing is a growing trend in both the public and private sectors that allows an employee to spend
more time with their family. It is a contractual arrangement whereby two employees voluntarily
share one full-time job between them. In addition, the employee's pay, holidays and benefits
are shared according to the number of hours each works; in this case they would be shared
50% each. Given the higher level Administrative duties that are required and external
recruitment is necessary. However, any internal candidates can apply.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The salary range is $3482 to $4232 for a full-time Executive Assistant, and as a part of a Job -
sharing agreement the salary will be shared between the two employees. Sufficient funding is
available in the Salaries Part Time Account, Number 100-6020-6020-1040.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Recruitment and Ratification of One Employee Appointment to the Part Time position
of Executive Assistant in the City Manager's office.
Attachment: Budgeted position organizational chart.
