ITEM #6 <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF September 4, 2007 <br />TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL <br />FROM: BOB MILLER, CHIEF OF POLICE <br />SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR THE REQUEST FOR RECRUITMENT AND <br />RATIFICATION OF EMPLOYEE APPOINTMENT TO THE FULL-TIME <br />POSITIONS SENIOR POLICE DISPATCHER AND POLICE <br />DISPATCHER I OR II. <br />DATE: August 20, 2007 <br />BACKGROUND: <br />The Police Department has in its 2007/08 fiscal year budget a Police Dispatch Supervisor <br />position. The promotional process has been completed for that position leaving a vacant Senior <br />Police Dispatcher and subsequently a vacant Police Dispatcher position. Both positions are <br />incorporated in the 2007/08 fiscal year budget. The Department is seeking approval to internally <br />fill the Senior Police Dispatcher position and begin recruitment for the resulting vacated Police <br />Dispatcher position. The current salary range for Sr. Police Dispatcher is $3,154 to $3,834 per <br />month; and the current salary range for Police Dispatcher I is $2,731 to $3,320 per month. <br />DISCUSSION / ANALYSIS: <br />The Senior Police Dispatcher and Police Dispatcher are assigned to the Departments <br />Communications Division and each perform dispatch duties to include; telephone contact with <br />citizens, 911 and wireless 911 response, the dispatching of police personnel to calls for service to <br />include emergency and critical situations, the collection of information for DOJ reporting, locating <br />and entering information to and from Law Enforcement data bases, etc. In addition to the <br />aforementioned duties, the Senior Police Dispatcher serves as a quasi -supervisor performing field <br />training, scheduling, resource notification in the event of systems failure, etc. The recent <br />promotion of a Senior Police Dispatcher has left that position vacant. The Department currently <br />has seven qualified Police Dispatchers, and is seeking Council approval to internally promote a <br />Police Dispatcher to the Senior position. The promotion will result in creating a vacant Police <br />Dispatcher position. Additionally, the Police Department is seeking approval to subsequently <br />recruit for and fill the resulting vacant Police Dispatcher position. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: <br />There will be no financial impact in the 2007/2008 fiscal year as adequate funding was approved. <br />The incumbents will be classified at a lower step; therefore no additional funds are needed. <br />ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: <br />None <br />
