ITEM #8
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF OCTOBER 2, 2007
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: AMER JAKHER, P.E., PW DIRECTOR / CITY ENGINEER
SUBJECT: RATIFY THE RECRUITMENT AND APPOINTMENT FOR A FULL TIME
POSITION OF A MAINTENANCE WORKER I TO UNDERFILL A MW III
VACANCY IN THE STREETS DIVISION, PUBLIC WORKS
DEPARTMENT.
DATE: SEPTEMBER 10, 2007
BACKGROUND:
In March 2007, an eligibility list was created for the Public Works Department's Streets Division
Maintenance Worker I and II positions. The corresponding salary ranges for these two positions
are: $2,712 to $3,297 for the MW I and $2,848 to $3,461 for a MW II. A MW III of the Street
Division has provided management with a two weeks notice, which will result in a vacancy within
the Street Division. The salary range for Maintenance Worker III is $3,240 to $3,939.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Staff recommends underfilling this vacancy with a Maintenance Worker I position; the salary
range for Maintenance Worker I is $2,712 to $3,297 per month. Underfilling the vacant position
with a Maintenance Worker I position will not affect the execution of the Street Division's workload
and result in an initial savings to the division in the amount of approximately $20,000. Staff
requests authorization to underfill the vacant position from the existing eligibility list.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The General Fund will not be impacted by this recruitment as the position being filled is budgeted
for in the following accounts:
• Street Division: 100-6150-6160-1010 (salaries), 100-6150-6160-1100 (salary related
benefits, 100-6150-6160-1101 (taxable benefit).
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Not applicable.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST:
Not applicable.
7/10/03 City Clerk's Office Cb
