CITY OF COLTON ITEM #10
AGENDA REPORT
FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 20, 2007
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: AMER JAHKER, P.E., CITY ENGINEER
SUBJECT: ADOPT RESOLUTION AMENDING RESOLUTION NO. 2119 TO
ADD THE PLACEMENT OF TWO STOP SIGNS AT THE
INTERSECTION OF "F" STREET AND 10TH STREET
DATE: November 8, 2007
BACKGROUND:
The State of California Vehicle Code allows the installation of traffic control devices, if adopted by
a City ordinance or a resolution. Installation of stop signs, as well as other traffic control devices,
must be warranted under the guidelines established in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices. In October 2007, city staff conducted a traffic engineering analysis of the intersection of
10th Street at F Street and concluded that installation of stop signs on "F" Street approaching 10th
Street from the east and west is warranted under the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
guidelines.
ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION:
The City of Colton recently completed installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Colton
Avenue/ G Street/10th Street. Recent re -design of the intersection of 10th Street and G Street
increases the traffic along 10th Street. Immediately north of this intersection is the intersection of
10th Street at F Street. Stop sign controls are present at the 10th & F intersection, for northbound
and southbound approaches on 10th Street. When the signal was energized an increase in through
traffic was introduced on 10th Street and staff recommends installation of stop signs on F Street.
The installation of stop signs on F Street would provide a controlled intersection for pedestrians and
motorists allowing motorists to safely negotiate the intersection. The location was reviewed by the
City of Colton Traffic Safety Committee on November 14, 2007, and a recommendation was made
to install the traffic control devices.
Staff recommends approval of the installation of stop signs on F Street at l Oth Street from the east
and west to improve and create a safer traffic condition than currently exists.
