CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF FEBRUARY 19, 2008
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Bill Smith, Community Services Director
ITEM #10
SUBJECT: Approve Acceptance of the County of San Bernardino, Department of
Nutrition 2007 Mini Grant, in the Amount of $2,366.34, for the Recreation
Division `Mission -Nutrition' Program, and Approve and Adopt a
Resolution Amending the Approved Budget for Fiscal Year 2007-08, to
Reflect Receipt of the said Grant and the Allocation for Expenditure
DATE: 11 February 2008
BACKGROUND:
In early 2006, the Recreation Division of the Community Services department applied and
received approval for the funding of the "Mission -Nutrition" program. The goal of this program is
to motivate families in Colton to improve the quality of their diets, through education regarding the
need for fruit and vegetable consumption and regular physical activity. The program was
incorporated into the existing Drop-in Recreation programs held at the Luque and Gonzales
Community Centers and was a tremendous success. As 2006 participants of the Mini Grant
process, our Mission -Nutrition program showcased our ability to organize, coordinate and utilize a
host of resources to create a viable program that met the goals and requirements set forth by the
Desert Sierra Nutrition Network. As such, the Recreation Division applied for the second year of
grant funding in 2007.
The current grant was administered during the timeframe of April 1 — September 15, 2007
when the Nutrition & Fitness message was incorporated into regular activities, three days per
week, within our existing Drop-in Recreation programs at the Luque and Gonzales Centers.
Activities included instruction on making healthy snacks, learning about nutrition, helping children
develop a healthy body image, increasing aerobic activity, and increasing daily intake of fresh
fruits and vegetables. The key goals were increasing physical activity and improving quality
snacking. The program strove to provide a program that the target audience both enjoyed and
learned from.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Overall, both staff members and Colton residents benefited from the "Mission- Nutrition"
Program. The funding was used to provide Nutrition Education curriculum, purchase food for the
twice weekly cooking/snack preparation demonstrations and sampling by the participants, and
other incidental expenses. This funding from the County of San Bernardino Nutrition program is
reimbursement for funds used to implement the eight week program.
The success of the program has led to the approval of our application for this second
round of funding, in the amount of $2,366.34.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There is no net general fund impact from this grant. The funds, totaling $2,366.34, should
be placed into City revenue account 225-5880 and the allocation for expenditure in account
number 225-6200-6202-2301 should likewise be increased by the grant amount, increasing the
balance from $6727.49 to $9093.83.
