ITEM #12
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF APRIL 1, 2008
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: AMANDA RHINEHART; INTERIM PUBLIC WORKS ADMINISTRATOR
SUBJECT: REQUEST COUNCIL DIRECTION FOR ILLUMINATED STREET
SIGNAGE DESIGN.
DATE: March 24, 2008
BACKGROUND:
Council approved the commencement of a New Street Signage Program in January 2006. The
Project as presented would install new signage city wide, however due to the total Project costs the
Project would be completed in phases. This Project identified a new street design for all
nonsignalized intersections; attached as Exhibit A. The first phase of this Project was funded in
fiscal year 2005/2006. This phase provided the project with $25,000 and installed one hundred new
street signs, approximately fifty intersections. The intersections included in this phase are attached
hereto as Exhibit B; none of the intersections included in this phase were signalized intersections.
ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION:
The first phase of this Project installed new signage along our major thoroughfares — La Cadena
Drive, Rancho Avenue, Valley Boulevard and Mt. Vernon Avenue. As the approved signage
was only for nonsignalized intersections those intersections along these thoroughfares which are
signalized did not get replaced.
The city's signalized intersections currently have illuminated signage without a city logo, Exhibit
C. Intersections that have recently been signalized as a result of capital improvement projects
have illuminated signage that reflects the new blue color of street signage approved by Council in
January 2006. On February 19, 2008, Council action approved an additional $25,000 for the
second phase of this Project. Staff is requesting direction from Council before moving forward
in replacing signalized street signage and has attached available options as Exhibit D: illuminated
signage with a city logo, illuminated signage without a city logo and reflectorized signage with a
city logo. Below is a survey of the type of signage surrounding cities utilize for their signalized
intersections:
