Staff Report to the Mayor and City Council
Approval to participate in Summer Food Service Program
May 4, 2010
Page 2
Additionally, this program offers support to working families by assisting them in ensuring their
children receive a nutritious lunch or snack during off-track timeframes. This is especially
important here in the City of Colton, where over 70% of school age children qualify for free or
reduced lunch at school.
ISSUES/ANALYSIS
This program will aid the Recreation Division in providing nutritious afternoon snacks in all
youth programs, including Day Camp, Tot Camp, Drop -In Recreation at Luque and Gonzales
Centers, Teen Center, and Childcare sites; all the while stretching our budgeted funds. There are
some costs associated with administering this program, however these costs will be absorbed by
utilizing full-time staff and existing resources, so that no additional City funds will be necessary.
The program is a reimbursement program, and the City will submit invoices to the Department of
Education for expenses incurred in providing snacks to our participants. The Community
Services Department has already budgeted this funding for the next fiscal year, so these
reimbursements will allow for enhanced services within each of the programs listed above.
FISCAL IMPACTS
There is no General Fund impact as a result of the recommended action.
ALTERNATIVES
Provide alternative direction to staff.
ATTACHMENTS
Participation Agreement — Summer Food Service Program
