Historic Assessment Report <br />City of Calton, community Develoment Department <br />Property Address: 0 Street and La Candena Drive <br />Assessor Parcel Number: <br />Current Owner: City of Cotton <br />650 North LaCadena Drive <br />Cotton, CA 9232. <br />Date of Construction: 1967 <br />Architectural Style and Physical Description: <br />A public fountain, consisting of a single vertical wall of rough cut stone with Aztec calendar insets, and <br />small irregular shaped poots located on either side of the vertical wall. A rectangular shaped neon sign is <br />affixed_to the top of the vertical watt. <br />Site Significance: <br />This property is significant as a prominent local landmark. The traffic island located at La Cadena and 0 <br />Street was recognized as an eyesore. On August 1 1967, Kay Holtzendorff of the Chamber of Commerce <br />Beautification Committee made a formal presentation to the City Council. He stated the City Councitperson <br />Gertrude Spragin, the first woman councilperson in the City of Colton, was chairperson of the Beautification <br />Committee. Mr. Holtzendorff stated that Mrs. Spregins was working with local business men in the area on <br />the beautification of the island using their own design and voluntary funds. The name of the fountain was <br />proposed to be "La Fuente de Unidad." Mr. Don Abril, a committe member stated at the councit meeting that <br />the project would cost approximately $1,000.00 and that all labor would be furnished by the committee and <br />the Latin American Merchants Association. The project was approved by the Council, and work commenced in <br />mid August 1967, Rocks were brought from San; Felipe, Mexico and the Aztec calendars were also acquired in <br />Mexico and brought to Colton. Local cement contractor Jose Castro provided the masonry work. The fountain <br />was completed in mid September, 1967. the landmark was restored in September 1981, and additional cleaning <br />and repairs were completed in 1992. <br />
