CITY OF COLTON' <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />For Council Meeting of <br />June 15, 1993 <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />FROM: DAVID MICHAEL DAVIS, CITY LIBRARIAN <br />SUBJECT: SUBMISSION OF CALIFORNIA LIBRARY SERVICES Date: MAY 10, 1993 <br />ACT (CLSA) "FAMILIES FOR LITERACY" GRANT <br />APPLICATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $20,555 <br />BACKGROUND <br />The Colton Public Library is eligible to apply for CLSA state grant <br />funds to continue a "Families for Literacy" program for a fourth <br />year beginning FY 93-94 in the amount of $20,5`55.. The program, <br />coordinated at the Luque Branch Library, involves volunteer tutors <br />and adult learners in activities that promote parents and their <br />children reading together. If funded, instructional resource <br />materials will be purchasedanda part-time Family Literacy Program <br />Coordinator will plan and continue to implement suitable programs <br />to promote reading. <br />STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM <br />We at the Colton Public Library endeavor to reach parents who are <br />having difficulty bei -ng a reading role model for their children. <br />We work with them to show them how they can better teach their <br />children and together overcome the cultural, educational and <br />economicdisadvantages that transmit low literacy from generation <br />to generation. During FY 92-9,3, the Colton Public Library <br />"Families for Literacy" program has enrolled 61 local families with <br />421 children actively participating in the reading program. <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />Without grant funding, such a reading program can only otherwise <br />continue with the City's General Funds. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT <br />No -cost item to the City No local matching funds are required. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Staff recommends that Council authorize the City to submit a <br />California Library Services Act (CLSA) Grant Application to support <br />a "Families for Literacy" program. <br />The Colton Public Library Board of; Trustees has..reviewed this <br />mattes and concurs with this recommendation <br />Attachments: City Manager's Concurrence <br />Page 1 of --1 — Item No.J <br />
