Status of the Cemetery Operations
July 8, 1996
Page 2
to the Council again at the meeting of July 16, 1996 to present them with a
oral report on the status of the operations.
The Cemetery is operating with a provisional Maintenance Worker III
employee (one of the Cemetery employees that was laid off with experience
in Cemetery operations) and a Maintenance Worker I employee that was laid
off through the outsourcing of the Sanitation Department. Three services
were held last week and three are scheduled so far this week. The services
have gone well and with no complications. Recruitment for the full-time
position of Maintenance Worker III was closed on July 3, 1996. We will be
holding oral board interviews with qualifying candidates the week of July
15, 1996 and recommending a full-time appointment the same week.
• As mentioned above, the general maintenance of the Cemetery grounds
will be handled by a local landscape contractor, RP Landscape (also
handling the Landscape Maintenance District). The contractor has already
initiated work on the Cemetery grounds, on two dates, June 27 and July 3,
1996.
. The City Manager and I toured the Cemetery grounds on July 2, and
established a list of improvements that need to be addressed by Cemetery
Staff over the next few weeks, with some assistance from other
departments.
We are working with Staff from the Electric Utility in reviewing the
applicability of the GIS system to the operations of the Cemetery and will
keep the Council apprised of these efforts.
In summary, under the direction of the City Council, Staff has been
successful in lowering the projected deficit at the Cemetery from
approximately $75,000 to $25,000 this fiscal year. This has resulted in a
minimal reduction in staffing. The layoffs of previous Cemetery employees
occurred as a result of the application of employee approved layoff
procedures. However, the Cemetery is presently and will be continuing to
operate with 2 Maintenance Worker positions. The maintenance is being
improved through the landscape maintenance contract, the operations will
be improved through the application of the GIS system and we have been
able to accommodate the needs of the community with the resources
available to us.
Should any of the Members of the City Council have any questions
regarding this matter, please contact me.
