CITY OF COLTON <br />LEGAL ASSISTANT <br />Under general supervision, assists the City Attorney in the preparation of legal <br />documents, correspondence, research, analysis, hearing and trial preparation, and <br />tracking of legal cases; performs related duties as required. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />This class is assigned to the office of the City Attorney and is characterized by <br />responsibility to provide a varied range of paraprofessional legal assistance to the City <br />Attorney. Work performed is under the direction and technical review of the City <br />Attorney. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: <br />Maintenance of legal calendar for all pending litigation matters, including general <br />liability matters; responsible for management of City Attorney files and records; <br />preparation of documents, including law and motion pleadings for writ of mandate <br />matters to be handled directly by the City Attorney, including limited legal research and <br />analysis; establishment of a system for monitoring Code Enforcement actions and <br />pending matters to assure full coverage by City Attorney on an as -needed basis; <br />finalization of ordinances and resolutions in City format; maintenance of systems within <br />the City Attorney's office to assure full confidentiality of all work product and pending <br />matters; coordination of work requests from the City Council and City departments and <br />establishment of calendar system for such requests; monitoring and processing of outside <br />legal services billings; preparation of quarterly reports of legal costs and allocation of <br />City Attorney and outside counsel time; management of all time records and accounts on <br />a matter -by -matter basis; draft correspondence; may assist in pre-trial case preparation; <br />organizes, controls and prepares exhibits based on factual research; may review and <br />summarize depositions and other legal documents; arranges for witnesses and informs <br />them of substantive legal aspects of cases; prepares exhibit and trial notebooks; <br />researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, ordinances, court decisions, <br />criminal pleadings, police reports, legal documents and articles; researches authorities <br />and pertinent cases on specific points of law; analyzes elements of case with attorney to <br />identify legal questions; abstracts pertinent case law for use in preparation of briefs; <br />performs case status monitoring; files updates to West's Annotated Codes; prepares <br />agenda titles; prepares agenda reports; follows up on agenda items or other matters with <br />department directors, City Manager, and others, as directed; general clerical and <br />telephone answering. <br />
