CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />For Council Meeting of September 17, 1996 <br />TO: <br />HONORABLE MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL <br />APPROVAL: <br />MALIK FREEMAN, CITY MANAGER <br />FROM: <br />BERNIE LUNSFORD, CHIEF OF POLICE 4,4, <br />SUBJECT: <br />APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION REQUESTING COPS FUNDING <br />DATE: <br />SEPTEMBER 11, 1996 <br />Assembly Bill 3229 provided funding for the Citizens Option for Public Safety (COPS) Program. The <br />City of Colton is eligible to receive funds for front line law enforcement services directed toward <br />anti -gang and community crime prevention programs. <br />The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has satisfied the requirements of Assembly Bill <br />3229 and requested the State Controller to disburse the County and its cities their share of <br />available funds. The Colton Police Department is eligible to receive $102,350. To meet the <br />specific requirements, the police department must supplement existing police services and direct <br />action to anti -gang and crime prevention programs. Upon receipt the funds will be disbursed into <br />two police problem solving categories, intervention and suppression. <br />ano Intervention <br />$30,000 will be allocated to the Neighborhood Services Department to provide funds for at risk <br />youthful offenders and provide gang intervention and social community related programs. <br />+ang and Violence Sunnressio <br />$72,350 will be provided for police overtime to fund problem solving police responses to reduce <br />violent crime most associated with gang activity. Experience defines these as robberies, car <br />jackings, drive by shootings and neighborhood terrorism related to street gangs. <br />Other than accept funding and intensify problem solving police and community activities, the only <br />other alternative is to remain status quo and not apply for these funds. <br />The grant provides $102,350.
