FIREFIGHTER <br />DEFINITION <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />Under supervision, to respond to fire alarms and to protect life and property endangered by fire; <br />to maintain equipment and quarters; to perform special assignments; and to do other work as <br />required. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br />Responds to alarms; lays lines of hose; directs streams of water; carries and sets up ladders; <br />ventilates buildings; performs rescue work; mops, sweeps and cleans after fires to prevent water <br />damage; washes, polishes and services fire apparatus and equipment; drills with company <br />members; attends special instruction in fire fighting and prevention techniques; administers first <br />aid; tests, washes and hangs hose; stands regular radio and floor watch detail and assists callers; <br />studies city layout and water systems; operates resuscitators and inhalators; serves as a substitute <br />fire engineer; responds to emergency calls when off duty. <br />As assigned, to serve as Firefighter Specialist; performs the duties related to Mobile Intensive <br />Care/Paramedic services requiring a minimum of EMT -P certification; or performs the duties <br />related to fire prevention, weed abatement, etc. <br />LICENSE REQUIRED <br />A valid and appropriate California Driver's License. <br />DESIRABLE OUALIFICATIONS <br />Ability to: <br />Learn fire fighting principles and techniques; <br />Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of fire fighting equipment; <br />Learn and maintain proficiency in first aid practices; <br />Retain presence of mind in emergency situations, <br />Understand and follow oral and written directions; <br />Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work; <br />Meet City standards of age, height, weight and physical fitness. <br />Experience: <br />None required. <br />Education: <br />Equivalent to graduation from high school. <br />Approved by Council: October 28, 1975 <br />
