Vrrrrrw- <br />:Fontana kicks off <br />,--city manager search <br />By Troy Andereon <br />Daily Bulletin <br />FONTANA — The search for a <br />now city manager is expected to <br />begin immediately after the <br />Fontana City Council hired a <br />management march firm Tues. <br />day. <br />'In closed session, the council <br />picked Los Anrles-based Nor. <br />man Roberts Associates to <br />recruit a now city manager. <br />City officials hope an annual <br />salary of $125,000 to $135,000 a <br />year will attract a top-notch city <br />manager. Departing City Man- <br />ager Greg Devereaux, who <br />accepted Ontario's top adminis. <br />trative post July 28, is paid <br />$98,400 a year. <br />: Fontana came up with the pro- <br />posed salary after conducting a <br />purvey of citymanagers' <br />in nearby cities. . I <br />Devereaux had not received a <br />faise since he became city man- <br />ager in 1993. Ontario's last city <br />manager made $133,044 plus <br />benefits. Although Devereauxs <br />contract requires he give three <br />months notice, he may be able to <br />leave by the end of August. - - <br />"Norman Roberts has a lot of <br />years of experience," Director of <br />Management Services Ken Hunt <br />said. "'He will start very quickly. <br />It's Possible candidates- could be <br />available to be interviewed in <br />eight to 10 weeks." <br />The city plans to? ay Roberts a <br />base service fee 0 $14 500 and <br />not to exceed 4,000. <br />Tenv'erleaux's four-year tenure <br />brought calm after seven years of <br />turmoil. In 1987, City Manager <br />Jack patello resigned amid <br />charges of corruption. He was <br />replaced by John O'Sullivan in <br />1988, who was fired three years <br />later. Russell Carlson was named <br />interim city manager in 1991, <br />then was replaced by Jay Corey <br />after 10 months. Corey was fired <br />in 1993. <br />. Mayor Dave Eshleman said by <br />of%ring the higher salary, the city <br />should be able to attract a city <br />manager who will stay in <br />Fontana. <br />The council was expected to <br />decide whether to allow police offi- <br />cers who move laterally to <br />Fontana from other agencies to <br />keep their previous rank, but <br />decided to continue the matter at <br />a later date. The department cur- <br />rently requires officers to have <br />experience in Fontana before they <br />can be promoted to higher ranks. <br />
