CITY OF COLTON <br />POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE <br />DEFINITION• <br />Under general supervision, to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to enforce state <br />and local traffic regulations; to patrol an assigned beat, to perform special assignments; and to do <br />other related work as required. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: <br />Operates an automobile or walks in patrolling an assigned area for the prevention of crime and the <br />enforcement of traffic laws and regulations. <br />Responds to radio and telephone dispatches and appears at scenes of disorder and crime; notes and <br />reports traffic hazards; assists in controlling traffic at scenes of emergencies; investigates and prepares <br />reports on accidents, offenses and damages to property; gives directions and information; makes <br />arrests and citations, gives verbal warning; prepares reports on arrests and property impounded; <br />directs traffic. <br />Makes security checks to determine that buildings are locked; inspects establishments providing <br />alcoholic beverages and entertainment; intervenes in private and public disputes to protect the public <br />and maintain order, requests medical attention when necessary; appears in court as arresting officer; <br />transports prisoners; assists in the investigation of crimes involving adults or juveniles; investigates <br />complaints; interrogates persons whose actions are suspicious. <br />Reports need for maintenance of motorized equipment, reports street lamps not working; sees that <br />objects are removed from streets which might endanger traffic; issues citations for parking violations; <br />participates in training conferences and programs; writes log of activities and case reports. <br />As assigned, serves as Detective Police Officer in full-time performance of investigation work: <br />makes investigation of burglaries, robberies, assaults, petty thefts, and other criminal acts as primary <br />investigator; works as secondary investigator on major crimes such as homicides; prepares written <br />reports on investigations; gives daily reports to supervisor. <br />As assigned, to serve as Police Identification Officer, collects and preserves evidence at scene of <br />crime and accident; lifts fingerprints; draws sketches, takes photos. <br />As assigned, to serve as Dispatcher; receives incoming telephone and radio calls; secures and records <br />information; dispatches personnel by radio in accordance with predetermined plans. <br />
