CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF JUNE 3,1997 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL: GRACIE FERNANDEZ HARMON, ACTING CITY MANAGER FROM: GRACIE FERNANDEZ HARMON, PERSONNEL DIRECTOR SUBJECT: REQUEST COUNCIL SET SALARY RANGE FOR THE PART-TIME POSITION OF SENIOR LIFEGUARD AND POOL MANAGER IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES DEPARTMENT DATE: MAY 22,1997 BACKGROUND: With the opening of the Community Center and new swimming pool, the City has had difficulty recruiting qualified lifeguards. Senior Lifeguards and Pool Managers are part-time positions and are compensated at the hourly rate of $7.00 and $7.50 respectively. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: The Neighborhood Services Director discovered that a local water amusement park has hired a majority of qualified lifeguards. This amusement park pays lifeguards at an hourly rate of $10.00. To be able to compete for the limited number of qualified lifeguards, the Neighborhood Services Director is recommending that we increase the hourly rate for Senior Lifeguard to $10.00 and for Pool Manager to $11.00. These are part-time positions, and receive no other City -paid benefits. Failure to recruit and hire a sufficient number of lifeguards will directly impact the hours of operation of the City's pool. FINANCIAL IMPACT: This results in additional cost of approximately $600 for the remainder of this fiscal year. This additional amount can be absorbed by the Neighborhood Services Department. Senior Lifeguards and Pool Managers are general fund positions and are funded for the 1996-97 fiscal year as follows: Account No. 100-6200-6203-1040 (salaries - temporary). Additionally, facility user fees will partially pay for the cost of these positions. Randy L.
