CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING OF JUNE 17, 1997
TO HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
APPROVAL: Gracie Fernandez Harmon, Acting City Manager
FROM: Tom Hendrix, Acting fire Chief
SUBJECT: Consider setting up Revenue and Expenditure Accounts
attributable to CPR and Rescue training programs offered
by the Colton Fire Department
DATE:
BACKGROUND:
May 26, 1997
The Fire Department offers CPR and Rescue Systems training throughout the year. These
courses are instructed by off duty firefighters and funded through registration fees.
DISCUSSION / ANALYSIS:
The Fire Department has offered CPR training to the public for the last 22 years.
However, due to an increasing call load it became difficult to deliver a quality program
with on duty personnel. In addition, the CPR mannequins and other supplies, that are also
used for firefighter training, were rapidly wearing out. In order to continue providing a
quality CPR training program and also to reduce the impact on the department's training
budget, the department now offers CPR and First Aid training to the public and businesses
for a registration fee of $20. The $20 registration fee is used to pay for off duty
firefighters to instruct the courses and also to pay for replacement supplies.
The Fire Department also offers State Certified Rescue Systems Training under a similar
format, however, these courses are offered only two or three times a year and are attended
primarily by firefighters from other agencies. The registration fees for Rescue Systems
classes vary according to the type of class and these fees are used to pay for off duty
instructors and expendable supplies such as ropes and webbing. Colton firefighters who
have not received specific Rescue Systems Training are also sent to these classes at no
expense to the city.
Item NO. 13
