CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />For Council Meeting of November 4, 1997 <br />TO: HONORABLE MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL <br />APPROVAL: LEN WOOD, INTERIM CITY MANAGER <br />FROM: BERNIE LUNSFORD, CHIEF OF POLICE <br />SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION EXPENDING COPS FUNDING <br />DATE: OCTOBER 21, 1997 <br />BACKGROUND: <br />Assembly Bill 3229 provided funding for the Citizens Option for Public Safety (COPS) Program. The City <br />of Colton has received funds for front line law enforcement services directed toward anti -gang and <br />community crime prevention programs. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: <br />The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has satisfied the requirements of Assembly Bill 3229 <br />and requested the State Controller to disburse the County and its cities their share of available funds. <br />The Colton PoliceDepartment has received $102,725. To meet the specific requirements, the police <br />department must supplement existing police services and direct action to anti -gang and crime prevention <br />programs. The funds will be expended on proactive government based problem solving activities. <br />$15,000 will be allocated to the Neighborhood Services Department to provide funds to contract a <br />security officer to assist the Neighborhood Services Department in'the security of the City parks and <br />park restrooms. <br />Community Based Policing Projects and Gang Suppression: <br />$87,725 will be provided to proactive community based projects, i.e., school activities, police - <br />neighborhood team programs and problem solving police responses. These will supplement the anti- <br />violence gang activities thus impacting gang and juvenile crime ranging from curfew violations to <br />robbery, drive-by shooting and neighborhood terrorism. <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />Other than accept funding and intensify problem solving police and community activities, the only other <br />alternative is to remain status quo and not accept these funds. <br />FISCAL IMPACT: <br />This does not affect the general fund. <br />The grant provides $102,725.
