Increasing Competitiveness Through Business' <br />and ]lob Growth, New Governance Approaches.,, <br />and Economic Opportunity for All <br />puposo <br />The Symposium is a policy -level event that brings together key <br />players, successful practitioners and experts to explore the <br />strategic thinking, planning, and action needed to create a <br />world class local economy. <br />ACHIEVING WORLD CLASS LOCAL ECONOMIES is designed <br />to help you lead your city and region to greater competitiveness <br />in today's global economy. <br />Through keynote speakers, panel discussions, and interactive <br />participation, you will learn about cutting-edge strategies <br />that are working in localities around the nation. The program <br />will help you develop,clear visions and insights about your <br />city's place in the global economy and the implications for <br />businesses, households, and public institutions. % <br />You will learn useful and practical steps that you can take in <br />your community to create economic opportunities that meet <br />the needs of all of your city's workers and families. <br />Who shoald aticad <br />This symposium is designed for elected officials and other <br />decision makers — economic developers, city and county <br />managers, business and community leaders — who are working <br />to make local economies world class performers that provide <br />economic opportunity for all. We encourage mayors and other <br />The Symposium begins with a welcoming event on Sunday <br />everting providing attendees with an opportunity to network <br />with colleagues. <br />On Monday, E.J. Dionne, Jr. will launch a session devoted to <br />"Globalization, Local Economies, and Economic Insecurity," <br />including a panel of elected local officials and analysts focused <br />on how to frame these issues locally and what to do about <br />them. Another session will include a speech by national <br />columnist Neal Peirce and a panel of people who are managing <br />successful local collaborations for "Regional Governance for <br />Economic Competitiveness." A "City Showcase" will facilitate <br />learning about many programs from around the country. The <br />focus of the day will be on ideas that work and challenges and <br />opportunities for local leaders. <br />On Tuesday, major sessions will look at the practicalities of <br />connecting globally competitive regional economies and how <br />local leaders most effectively can establish economically <br />meaningful linkages with other regional economies.
