CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT For City Council Meeting of February 3, 1998 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL: HENRY GARCIA, CITY MANAGE FROM: BERNIE LUNSFORD, CHIEF OF POLICE SUBJECT: RATIFICATION OF EMPLOYEE APPOINTMENT TO THE FULL-TIME POSITION OF POLICE LIEUTENANT DATE: JANUARY 20, 1998 BACKGROUND: There is one (1) Police Lieutenant position vacant in the Police Department. Attached is the job description for the classification; salary range is $4,479 to $5,444 per month. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: An in-house promotional recruitment for said position was conducted and an eligibility list was established. The candidate being referred for Council ratification meets the education and experience required as specified in the job description. It should be noted that this promotion will generate upper movement in the department including a sergeant and corporal promotion. The testing process for a sergeant promotion was recently completed. Not only do I feel this position is essential to provide high quality police service, but failure to approve this promotion could jeopardize current grant funding which require all budgeted police officer positions be filled. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funding availability for this approved general fund positions is in the fiscal year 1997-98 budget funded in account no. 1 0-6070-60 1010/1100 (salary/benefits).
