CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 17, 1998 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council APPROVAL: Henry Garcia, City Manag FROM: Tom Hendrix, Fire Chief SUBJECT: Request for Recruitment and Ratification of Employee Appointment to the Full Time Position of Battalion Chief in the Fire Department DATE: November 5, 1998 BACKGROUND: There is currently one vacant Battalion Chief s position in the Fire Department. Attached is the job description of the classification; the salary range is $4,442 - $5,375 per month. Staff is requesting that a recruitment be conducted, establishing an eligibility list for the current opening, as well as any future vacancies which may occur during the term of the list. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: Recruitment for the position will be conducted and an eligibility list established, upon City Council approval. The candidate chosen will meet the education and experience requirements, as specified in the job description. ALTERNATIVES Not to fill the position. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The position has been funded in the Fiscal Year 1998-99 as follows: Account Number 100- 6090-6091-1010 (Salaries), and 100-6090-6091-1100 (Salary Related Benefits). CUSTOMER SERVICE IMPACT: Battalion Chiefs assume command of emergency incidents. Without their presence, command would have to be assumed by a Fire Captain, which would reduce staffing at the emergency incidents by one. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council approve the request for recruitment and ratification of employee appointment to the full-time position of Battalion Chief in the Fire Department.
