CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 17, 1998 <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />APPROVAL: Henry Garcia, City Manag <br />FROM: Tom Hendrix, Fire Chief <br />SUBJECT: Request for Recruitment and Ratification of Employee <br />Appointment to the Full Time Position of Battalion Chief <br />in the Fire Department <br />DATE: November 5, 1998 <br />BACKGROUND: <br />There is currently one vacant Battalion Chief s position in the Fire Department. Attached is <br />the job description of the classification; the salary range is $4,442 - $5,375 per month. Staff <br />is requesting that a recruitment be conducted, establishing an eligibility list for the current <br />opening, as well as any future vacancies which may occur during the term of the list. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: <br />Recruitment for the position will be conducted and an eligibility list established, upon City <br />Council approval. The candidate chosen will meet the education and experience <br />requirements, as specified in the job description. <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />Not to fill the position. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: <br />The position has been funded in the Fiscal Year 1998-99 as follows: Account Number 100- <br />6090-6091-1010 (Salaries), and 100-6090-6091-1100 (Salary Related Benefits). <br />CUSTOMER SERVICE IMPACT: <br />Battalion Chiefs assume command of emergency incidents. Without their presence, <br />command would have to be assumed by a Fire Captain, which would reduce staffing at the <br />emergency incidents by one. <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Staff recommends that the City Council approve the request for recruitment and ratification of <br />employee appointment to the full-time position of Battalion Chief in the Fire Department. <br />TH/kd <br />Attachments Job Description <br />Request for Recruiment <br />Item # 5 <br />
