CITY OF COLTON <br />LEAD WATER UTILITIES OPERATOR <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the direction of the Water Utilities Supervisor and Water Utilities Manager, leads, <br />oversees, reviews and performs work activities and duties assigned to the water system <br />maintenance crews and assumes responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Lead Water Utilities Operator is the lead class responsible for overseeing work crews in <br />the maintenance, repair and installation of the water distribution system. This classification is <br />distinguished from the Water Utilities Supervisor classification by the performance of daily <br />maintenance tasks and operations. <br />Note: Incumbents in this classification are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of <br />the Department of Transportation. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level maintenance crews and staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following <br />• Leads, oversees, reviews and performs the work of staff responsible for the maintenance of <br />water system facilities and equipment. <br />• Supervises the operation and maintenance of construction equipment and/or machinery <br />including backhoes, pumping equipment, dump trucks, and well boosters. <br />• Assists in the training of lower level personnel in the areas of work; ensures adherence to safe <br />work methods, procedures and practices; identifies training opportunities and needs; makes <br />recommendations to higher level staff. <br />• Evaluates assigned work projects; estimates time, manpower and equipment necessary for the <br />successful completion of the project; acquires necessary resources as is appropriate; estimates <br />quantities and determines correct types and amounts of materials. <br />• Locates water mains and lines as needed for construction and maintenance and researches <br />records for USA tagging and location of lines; oversees servicing of water meters. <br />• Instructs maintenance staff in safety procedures and techniques and performs safety tailgate <br />meetings at job sites. <br />• Checks chlorine system; takes water samples throughout system on a regular basis and <br />performs special well samples as needed; prepares water samples for testing and processing. <br />• Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is <br />appropriate and resolves service complaints. <br />• Writes and prepares reports on daily activities of the division maintenance staff, monitors and <br />scans telemetry system for reservoir and well activity and status. <br />• Performs other related duties as required. <br />
