0
Cotton Councilmember D. Sanders
Letter to Mr. O. Ricardo Pimentel, Editor, San Bernardino County Sun
February 22, 1999
The Colton City Council—acting as the Redevelopment Agency—
demonstrated its willingness to do what is right rather than what is
politically expedient. The sacrifices that must be made to finance the
Rancho Mediterrania Program are difficult to accept. It means that
beneficial projects in other parts of the City will have to be postponed.
Nevertheless, this is the prudent approach to take by paying off the debt
at Rancho Mediterrania and returning any future lot sales proceeds to
the contributing project areas.
A cautious approach is warranted given this project's history and the
other challenges this City Council has inherited. Rather than adopt a
program and defer the funding until later, this Council has assessed the
costs and adopted a financing program which allows us to act
confidently that we can finish what we started.
In conclusion, the "Sun" should conduct more diligent analysis before
opining blindly and relying upon incorrect facts. It distorts the truth and
causes confusion, apprehension, and distrust among the population.
Respectfully,
Donald J. Sandrs
Council Member, District 1
Redevelopment Agency Chairman
DJS:kt:adf
cc: RDA Vice Chairperson & Agency Members
City Manager Henry T.
