CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For the Council Meeting of November 16, 1999
To: Honorable Mayor & City Council
Approval: Henry Garcia, City Manager
From: Dennis Morris, Human Resource Director
Adrian Reynosa, Acting Recreation Services Manager
Subject: Renaming of West Valley Park to George E. Brown Jr. Park
Date: November 4,1999
BACKGROUND:
Recently, a proposal to rename West Valley Park to George E. Brown Jr. Park was brought
forth by the Parks & Recreation Commission. The Parks & Recreation Commission referred
the matter to the Neighborhood Services Division for review of the proposal and to provide a
recommendation to the Commission.
DISCUSSION:
The Neighborhood Services Division put out flyers and a solicitation on Channel 3 to get the
public's response in renaming West Valley Park to George E. Brown Jr. Park. Of 16
responses received, the majority favored the proposed change. The Neighborhood Services
Division made its presentation to the Parks & Recreation Commission at the Commission
Meeting of September 15, 1999. At the Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting held on
October 20, 1999, the Commission, by unanimous vote, recommended to rename the park to
Congressman George E. Brown Jr. Park in honor of our recently deceased Congressman who
did so much for the City of Colton.
Attached is the City Attorney's legal opinion, stating that the City Council has the right to
consider naming or renaming any City Park under the existing Resolution No. R- I 66A-93.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the recommendation of the Parks & Recreation
Commission to rename West Valley Park to George E. Brown Jr. Park and approve the
renaming of the park. Staff recommends the adoption of the attached resolution.
PREPARED BY:
Adrian Reynosa, Acting Recreation Services Manager
Attachments Resolution
City Attorney Letter
Item #7
