CITY OF COLTON <br />FIRE ENGINEER <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general supervision of the Fire Captain, perform the full array of duties and <br />responsibilities assigned to classes in the Fire Engineer classification, including the operation and <br />maintenance of a variety of fire apparatus and fire fighting equipment; participate in fire fighting <br />activities, fire prevention inspections, and fire training; perform mechanical maintenance on <br />vehicles, equipment and apparatus; demonstrate a full understanding of all applicable policies, <br />procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assist in the training <br />of lower level fire suppression positions; perform a variety of other tasks in support of assigned <br />area of responsibility. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Fire Engineer is the journey level class responsible for the operation and general <br />maintenance of fire fighting apparatus, equipment, vehicles and tools. This classification is <br />distinguished from the next lower classification of Firefighter by the driving of fire apparatus and <br />vehicles and the operation of apparatus, equipment, and tools at an emergency scene; serve as <br />Fire Captain as assigned. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />Exercises technical supervision over other firefighters for the operation and general maintenance <br />of vehicles, equipment, and apparatus. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Perform the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Fire Engineer series including <br />driving fire -pumping apparatus to alarms and operating pumps at an emergency scene; <br />regulate water pressure through hose lines; operate and oversee the use of numerous types of <br />vehicles, equipment, tools, and apparatus; operate resuscitators, inhalators and perform first <br />aid; operate radio equipment. <br />• Inspect vehicles, equipment, and apparatus; perform general maintenance and minor repair <br />work; identify the need for major repairs; maintain records of maintenance and overhauls. <br />• Perform the duties of a Firefighter when pump is not being used at an emergency scene. <br />• Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods <br />associated with assigned duties. <br />• Keep a current knowledge of the City geographic layout and the water system. <br />• Participate in drills and other training activities. <br />• Participate in station maintenance and repair work; refill fire extinguishers. <br />• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is <br />appropriate and resolve complaints. <br />• Participate in public education programs in the areas of fire suppression and fire prevention. <br />• Work a variety of shifts including weekends and holidays; be available for emergency call- <br />back when off duty. <br />• Perform other related duties as required. <br />
