CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 21, 1999
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR & CITY COLIN
APPROVAL: HENRY T. GARCIA, CITY MANAGER
FROM: DAVID MICHAEL DAVIS, CITY LIBRARIAN
SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO ACCEPT A BILL GATES LIBRARY INITIATIVE GRANT
AWARD FOR THE COLTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
DATE: AUGUST 27, 1999
BACKGROUND:
The Colton Public Library has applied for and is eligible to receive a Bill Gates Library Initiative
Grant, which would greatly expand the availability of public access computing and internet
access at both the Main and the Luque Branch Libraries. Funding is targeted at those libraries
serving low-income communities, where the need is the greatest and the fewest number of
people have computers and internet access.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
The Colton Public Library is eligible to receive the following:
1. (8) stand-alone public access workstations
2. (2) Content Servers
3. Pre -loaded reference software including Encarta Encyclopedia, Encarta Africana, Virtual
Globe, Bookshelf, Expedia Reference Series, Magic School Bus, Barney Learning Series,
Corbis Multimedia Titles, and much more.
4. (2) Laser Printers
5. (2) 24 -Port Hubs
6. Cabling
7. Internal building wiring
8. Installation
9. Logistics support and training
The PC, server, and connectivity portion is in 'he form of a cash grant ordered through the Bill
Gates Library Initiative Grant Program. Components not covered by the grant are: 1) furniture,
and 2) internal on-going staff support.
It is our belief that the award of Bill Gates L-ibra y Initiative funding might possibly be the most
important grant received by the Colton Puulic Library since the original Carnegie building grant
of 1906. At the least, it will be a technological transformation for both the Main and Luque
Libraries, and will ensure that Colton will have the most technologically up-to-date libraries
possible.
ALTERNATIVES
Without.such grant funding, a public access computer program of such dimensions could only
otherwise be acquired by utilizing the City's General Fund.
Item #11
