CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF April 4, 2000
TO: Honorable City Council
APPROVAL: Henry Garcia, City Managet'
FROM: Ron Kenny, Director of Recreation & Parks %r
SUBJECT: Request to Change the Name of the Neighborhood Services
Department to the Parks, Recreation & Family Services
Department
DATE: March 27, 2000
BACKGROUND:
There is a need to better explain to the residents of Colton and the general public the
exact responsibilities of the Neighborhood Services Department. Staff believes this can
best be accomplished by renaming the Department.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
In July of 1999 the City's Park Division was reassigned from the Public Works
Department to the Neighborhood Services Department. Neighborhood Services also
includes recreation, human or social services, and childcare components.
Staff has met on several occasions to discuss the possibility of creating a new name for
the Department, which would better describe to our residents, the exact nature of our
responsibilities. Out of those meetings came the name Parks, Recreation & Family
Services. Certainly the parks & recreation functions are self-explanatory. Family
services is meant to encompass both childcare and human services to any family unit.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There would be no financial impact to the City. Department business cards would be
replaced with the new department name as each individual staff member needs to reorder.
CUSTOMER SERVICE IMPACT:
An important key to a municipal department's effectiveness is whether its residents
understand the types of services, which are available. Neighborhood Services does not
lend itself to clearly defining the purpose and mission of the Department.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve changing the name, Neighborhood
Services Department to the Parks, Recreation & Family Services Department.
Item #8
