This classification is distinguished from the next lower
classification of the Mechanic series by the performance of the more complex repairs and the full
array of duties associate with the series. Incumbents in this position may be required to work
holidays, evenings and weekends and be on-call for 24-hour shifts as needed.
Wastewater Eguiament Mechanic I
The Wastewater Equipment Mechanic I is the entry level class within the Wastewater
Equipment Mechanic series and is expected to learn and perform assigned duties and
responsibilities. Incumbents within this classification initially perform routine and less complex
duties and responsibilities and steadily receive more complex duties and responsibilities as
experience is gained. This classification is distinguished from the higher level classification of
Wastewater Equipment Mechanic II in that it is expected to perform assigned duties under direct
supervision as they learn their positions. In that this is a learning classification, typically
incumbents can reasonably expect to progress to the higher level classification of Wastewater
Equipment Mechanic II after gaining two years of experience in wastewater treatment facilities
equipment repair and maintenance.
Note: Incumbents in this classification are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of
the Department of Transportation.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Wastewater Eauinment Mechanic II
Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level wastewater utilities maintenance
staff and Wastewater Equipment Mechanic I class.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)
• Performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Equipment Mechanic series
including maintenance schedules, small and large repair projects and installation of associated
machinery which includes adjusting, lubricating, aligning, troubleshooting equipment problems
and repairing as appropriate.
• Performs daily rounds and keeps daily log of equipment functions; develops and performs
scheduled maintenance on machinery including lift stations pumps, piping and equipment,
submersible pumps, electric and gas driven motors, control systems, cooling systems, gear
drives, generators, low-pressure blowers, compressors, air control systems, boosters, valves,
digester units and chlorination and SO2 units.
