CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF JANUARY 4, 2000
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL
APPROVAL: HENRY T. GARCIA, CITY MANAGE
FROM: DAVID MICHAEL DAVIS, CITY LIBRARIAN.00
SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO ACCEPT AN ADDITIONAL $1,949 IN "BILL
GATES LIBRARY INITATIVE GRANT" FUNDING AMENDING THE
ADOPTED BUDGET FOR A TOTAL FY 1999/2000 APPROPRIATION
OF $36,949 AND AUTHORIZATION TO AWARD CONTRACT TO
GATEWAY IN THE AMOUNT OF $33,106 AND KENT DATACOM IN THE
AMOUNT OF $1,846.
DATE: DECEMBER 17, 1999
BACKGROUND
The Colton Public Library has been awarded a Bill Gates Library Initiative Grant which will
greatly expand the availability of public access computing and Internet access at both the Main
and Luque Branch Libraries. The Colton Public Library anticipated $35,000 in revenue, but has
in fact received a check in the amount of $36,949. The adopted budget, therefore, needs to be
amended to reflect the additional revenue.
DISCUSSION / ANALYSIS
The PC's, servers, hubs, cabling, and wiring are in the form of the $36,949 cash grant. In
addition to the cash grant — installation, logistics support, training and software are provided to
the Colton Public Library at no cost through the Bill Gates Library Initiative Grant Program. Per
provisions of grant, equipment must be purchased from the following sole sources: Gateway
and Kent DataCom.
ALTERNATIVES
Without such grant funding, a public access computer program of such dimensions could only
otherwise be acquired by utilizing the City's General Fund.
FINANCIAL IMPACT.
No Cost to City.
David Michael Davis, City Librarian
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that Council accept an additional $1,949 in "Bill Gates Library Initiative Grant"
funding and approve the resolution amending the adopted budget for a total FY 1999/2000
appropriation of $36,949. Staff recommends that Council authorize award of contract to
Gateway in the amount of $33,106 and to Kent DataCom in the amount of $1,846.
ATTACHMENT: RESOLUTION Item #5
