Item #3
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF October 16, 2001
Honorable Mayor and City Council
City Attorney
SUBJECT: Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Filling of City Council
District 1 Vacancy
DATE: October 16, 2001
BACKGROUND:
City staff requested that the City Attorney research the possible actions that the City
Council may take regarding the filling of the City Council vacancy in District 1 and report
the results of such research to the City Council.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
The City Attorney has prepared a more detailed memorandum on this issue, which is
attached to this staff report. Essentially, the City Council has the option of either filling
the vacancy in District 1 by appointment or calling a special election.
In any event, the City Council must either appoint a new member to the City Council or
call a special election to fill the vacancy within thirty (30) days of the date that the
vacancy occurs. The vacancy for District 1 occurred on October 2, 2001, when Council
Member Sanders resigned. As such, the City Council must take action to either make
an appointment or call a special election by November 1, 2001.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Unknown.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None.
1
