County Booking Fees
August 21, 2001
Page 2
(4) Upon request, the County will make reasonable efforts to collect and remit
to each city all booking fee charges (less collection costs) imposed on
convicted defendants by the courts which the city is entitled to recover.
As of June 29, 2001, only one of the Cities participating in the action, the City of Big Bear
Lake, has signed the new agreement.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Approve the supplemental settlement agreement.
2. Disapprove the supplemental settlement agreement.
3. Take no action.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None. The City currently pays a $159.72 booking fee. This figure will not change if the
supplemental settlement agreement is approved. Of course, the total amount spent by
the City on booking fees in any given year is variable because it depends upon the total
number of billable bookings.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the new supplemental settlement
agreement and authorize the City Manager and/or the Chief of Police to sign in it on behalf
of the City. The negotiated booking fee of $159.72 represents only a 5.1 % increase over
the 1995 fee and is the same fee the City currently pays. Due to the structure of the new
agreement, the fee will also likely remain unchanged for the near future, thus keeping costs
stable and aiding the City budgeting process. Further, the County's agreement to collect
and immediately remit to the Cities booking fees from convicted defendants should benefit
Colton.
Prepared by: Sonia R. Carvalho, City Attorney; Steven Anderson, Deputy City Attorney
Attorney:
Finance
Manager: U OTHER:
