<br />FIRE SAFETY SPECIALIST
<br />DEFINITION:
<br />Under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal, performs the full array of duties assigned to the Fire Safety
<br />Specialist class including fire inspections, hazardous materials inspections, fire investigations and conducting fire
<br />prevention education programs; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work
<br />methods associated with assigned duties; perform a variety of other tasks in support of assigned area of
<br />responsibility.
<br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
<br />The Fire Safety Specialist is a journey level, single position class responsible for performing the full array of fire
<br />inspection, education, and investigation duties.
<br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
<br />May occasionally exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level clerical staff.
<br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)
<br />• Perform the full array of duties assigned to the Fire Safety Specialist class including fire inspections,
<br />investigations, and conducting fire prevention education programs.
<br />• Conduct inspection of residential, commercial and industrial properties; types of inspections may include
<br />certificate of occupancy, compliance with Federal, State, County and local fire prevention codes and ordinances,
<br />fire and life safety clearance, storage, handling and use of hazardous materials and weed abatement.
<br />• Conduct investigations of fires to determine cause and origin.
<br />• Develop and administer public education programs in such areas as department operations, disaster
<br />preparedness, fire prevention, EMS activity, home safety and earthquake preparedness.
<br />• Develop and coordinate the department's community public relations program; serve as the department Public
<br />Information Officer.
<br />• Coordinate fire inspection and investigation activities with other City departments.
<br />• Act as a technical resource to Fire Department personnel, other City departments/divisions, community groups
<br />and schools.
<br />• Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned
<br />duties.
<br />• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve
<br />complaints.
<br />• Complete necessary paperwork documenting results of inspections and investigations and updating resources.
<br />• Perform other related duties as required.
<br />WORKING CONDITIONS:
<br />Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and
<br />stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and
<br />fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer key board. Additionally, the position requires near and far
<br />vision in reading written reports and work-related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and
<br />counter service. Fire inspection duties require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching,
<br />twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement
<br />in the performance of daily duties and both near and far vision. Additionally, the incumbent in outdoor fire
<br />inspection works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may work around or in
<br />contact with hazardous materials and other potentially toxic substances. Incumbent may be subject to physical
<br />threats, verbal abuse, or other stressful situations.
