CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF AUGUST 5, 2003
Item #10
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: K. Rulon, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Approve and Adopt a part-time salary resolution for Police Cadets
DATE: July 16, 2003
BACKGROUND:
Currently the Colton Police Department employs six Police Cadets who are assigned part-time to
the Administrative Services Division. The Police Cadet position has not had a salary increase
since 1999.
DISCUSSIOWANALYSIS:
Cadets' responsibilities include responding to the needs of the Department's customers at the
front counter as well as on the telephone. In addition, they process reports in preparation for court
and or filing. The current hourly rate for a Police Cadet is $7.50. In the recently adopted
2003/2004 Budget, the police department budgeted an hourly rate increase for each of the Cadets
to $10.00. The current rate paid by several of our surrounding cities averages $9.82 with the high
being 10.75 per hour. The proposed compensation increase is fair for the work these employees
contribute towards the organization mission. It is important to note that the Police Department has
recruited several full -times employees from our Police Cadet program, including several Police
Officers, Dispatchers, and Community Service Officers.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The maximum financial impact of the part-time salary increases through June 30, 2004, is
approximately $7,500.00. The increase has been approved and budgeted in the 2003/04 Fiscal
Year budget under account #100-6070-6080-1040.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None
CONFLICT OF INTEREST — Gift Disclosure Requirements
None
Staff recommends the City Council approve the attached part-time salary resolution amendment
effective the pay period beginning July 18, 2003.
Attachment:
Prepared by:/Wr#q'ee, Police Lieutenant
REVIEW TEAM ONLY
City Aftorney:lh.
