Item #33 <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR CITY COUNCIL MEETING OF June 17, 2003 <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and Council Members <br />FROM: Tammye Dunn, Community Projects Manager <br />SUBJECT: Old West Days, hosted by The City of Colton and <br />presented by The EARP Society <br />DATE: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 <br />BACKGROUND <br />The EARP Society is a non-profit corporation who is presenting the fifth annual Wyatt Earp's Old West Days. <br />Old West Days presents an educational, historical walk through the events of our nation in the 19`h century. <br />This is the first year that the City of Colton has had the opportunity and ability to host this three day event. <br />Wyatt Earp; Old West Days have been previously held at Box Springs Mountain Regional Park in Moreno <br />Valley from 1997 to 1999. The events attracted as many as 5,000 visitors a day, with field trips bringing <br />students from kindergarten to college throughout Southern California. <br />DISCUSSION/ ANALYSIS <br />Old West Days gives re -enactors a venue where they can put together a complete staging of their chosen <br />field of historic preference, thus showing the public how each occurrence of the 19`h Century evolved into <br />creating this great nation. Friday, October 24th has been specifically designated as Old West School Days, <br />in order to enlighten students attending the event as a class study. Students and adults have the opportunity <br />to meet and speak with President Lincoln; Generals Lee ft Grant; witness a Civil War Battle re-enactment; <br />Mountain Man rendezvous; U.S. Calvary; stunt show and stage coach rides. A realistic 1800's western town <br />will house a mercantile; town hall; "chuck wagon" food vendors; old fashioned saloon; authentic clothing <br />vendors and a real jail. Saturday will showcase a S.A.S.S. Cowboy Shooting Competition and the California <br />Mounted Shooters, with the evening ending with an authentic Civil War Cotillion Ball; the Butterfield Stage <br />Cowboy Ball and on Sunday morning Cowboy Church. <br />Other re-enactments will include Tombstone re-created; the gunfight at the O.K. corral; fast draw <br />competition; charity action shooting; 'sutlers' row; Native American village and a 'spaghetti western' stunt <br />show. <br />The festival will be held Friday October 24, 2003 through Sunday, October 26, 2003; 9:00 am to 5:00 pm <br />daily; located on a 72 -acre parcel at 2300 South Riverside Drive, Colton, California, 92324 <br />Marketing efforts include partnership with the Colton Area Museum Association, Colton; Gene Autry Museum, <br />Mervyn's Moving Mission, Los Angeles; Wells Fargo History Museum, San Diego Et Los Angeles ; San Bernardino <br />County Museum, Redlands and the California State Railroad Museum, Sacramento. Staff has established <br />associations with KABC, ICTN and Clear Channel Radio as advertising sponsors. <br />
