CITY OF COLTON Item #6
AGENDA REPORT
FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF JULY 20, 2004
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Kenneth Rulon, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Request to approve the reclassification of three Police Clerk II positions
to Senior Clerk positions within the Police Department to facilitate the
department's reorganization plans.
DATE: June 22, 2004
BACKGROUND:
The Police Department desires to reclassify three current police clerk II positions to the positions
of senior clerk due to the reorganization that is occurring within the department.
DISCUSSION/ ANALYSIS:
During the recent budget workshops the police department was asked to reduce personnel costs
in the amount of approximately $125,000.00. The police department exceeded the request by
eliminating two positions within the organization; the Police Support Services Supervisor and the
Information Systems Coordinator for a total savings of approximately $165,000.00. In order to
maintain our operations, we are requesting to reclassify three current Police Clerk II positions to
the positions of Senior Clerk so that these positions will be compensated for the increased
workload they will be assuming.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The cost to fund these reclassified positions has been included in the Police Department's
Fiscal Year 2004/ 2005 Budget. The total costs of these reclassifications is estimated to be
approximately $16,000.00 per year.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Not Applicable
ALTERNATIVES:
Do not approve the department's request to reclassify these positions and require the employees
to assume the responsibilities at their current compensation levels.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST- Gift Disclosure Requirements:
Not Applicable
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the department's request to reclassify the three
positions to ensure a smooth transition to our pending reorganization plans.
Prepared by: Frank Coe, Police Lieutenant
REVIEW TEAM N L
City Attorney: Finance Director: •
City Manager: OTHER:
