ITEM #23 CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT FOR THE COLTON UTILITY AUTHORITY MEETING OF DECEMBER 6, 2005 TO: HONORABLE CHAIRPERSON AND UTILITY AUTHORITY MEMBERS FROM: ERIC R. FRASER, DIRECTOR OF WATER & WASTEWATER OPERATIONS SUBJECT: AMEND THE CONTRACT WITH ROSS A. GUY & SON, INC. IN THE AMOUNT OF $22,000 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF SEWER PIPELINE IN THE ALLEY EAST OF MT. VERNON AVE AND WEST OF HOLLY AVENUE. BETWEEN LAUREL AVENUE AND OLIVE STREET. DATE: NOVEMBER 16, 2005 BACKGROUND: The 8 inch and 10 inch sewer pipelines located in the alley east of Mt. Vernon Avenue and west of Holly Avenue, between Laurel Avenue and Olive Street were found to have significant voids and were identified as areas of failure. The original replacement of the 8 inch sewer pipeline was estimated at 500 feet. However, due to unforeseen utilities the sewer pipeline needed to be extended to a manhole further than anticipated. This sewer line provides service to several residences on Holly Avenue and Mt. Vernon Avenue. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: In order to prevent raw sewage from backing up into the residents' homes, emergency replacement of the sewer pipeline was necessary. Initially, the work conducted by Ross A. Guy & Sons, Inc. was estimated to cost approximately $20,000. Contracts were executed on September 26, 2005 with Ross A. Guy & Sons, Inc. During construction, Ross A. Guy & Sons had to extend the sewer mainline further than anticipated. This required the use of additional resources and time to move the location of the new sewer pipeline alignment, resulting in a higher cost. The work has been completed.
