With the exception of all employees mentioned in A and B, <br />employees occupying full-time regular positions shall accrue <br />vacation time expressed in working hours in accordance with <br />the following: <br />During Years of Hours Accrual Per Annual Maximum Accrual <br />Continuous Service Month of Service Accrual. Notwithstanding anything in this section to the contrary, <br />employees do not accrue vacation time during the first six <br />months of employment. Vacation time shall be deemed credited <br />during this period with accrual effected upon the employee's <br />monthly anniversary date in accordance with A. B, or C of <br />this section as applicable. <br />E. Vacation accrual may be accumulated to not more than the <br />appropriate maximum accumulation except upon the written <br />request of the affected employee and approval of the Personne <br />Officer. In this event, an employee may be permitted to <br />exceed the maximum accumulation by an amount not in excess <br />of his accrual for a four month period. <br />F. Use of Vacation Time <br />(1) It is the intent that vacation time be used in time <br />increments sufficiently long to permit the employee <br />an adequate period of rest. The use of vacation time <br />in less than weekly increments is to be discouraged. <br />In no event may vacation be taken in increments of less <br />than one-hour nor for a period exceeding the number of <br />accrued whole days, except upon the recommendation of <br />a department head. The Personnel Officer may authorize <br />an eligible employee to incur a negative vacation <br />balance of up to five days, or up to 2-1/2 shifts for <br />Fire Department shift employees. <br />(2) Safety employees may not take vacation time during the <br />first year of service. For all other employees, no <br />vacation shall be taken during the first six months of <br />service. <br />(3) Vacations shall be taken at times determined by the <br />department head with due regard for the wishes of the <br />employee and for the needs of the service. <br />
