Cr f OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For Council Meeting of March 21, 1989
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: PAUL J. CONNOLLY, CHIEF OF POLICE `
SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR SUPPORT FOR CRIME RESISTANCE Date: 3-14-89
GRANT APPLICATION — SECOND YEAR FUNDING
The State of California Office of Criminal Justice Planning, has made
available second year funding to assist the City of Colton in dealing
more effectively with its crime problems. The grant program is
entitled "California Community Crime Resistance Program." For a city
the size of Colton, the State would, upon approval of the grant
application, provide $50,000 with a requirement of a minimum of 20%
to the City of Colton for its second year funding.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the program is to assist local agencies in the
following activities:
1. Initiating or expanding local crime prevention efforts.
2. Providing information and encouraging the use of new and
innovative refinements in traditional crime prevention methods.
3. Developing coordinated service networks including information
exchange and case referral between related crime resistance and
victim/service programs within the community.
Staff has prepared a grant proposal wherein funds would be provided
to continue staffing one additional bilingual crime prevention
officer to network with the school system, the criminal justice
agencies, the senior citizen group and existing city staff from Human
Services. The attached proposal is for the second year funding of
one police officer. Amount of funds to be provided by the State
would be $44,444 with a cash match funding from the City of Colton of
$11,111.
RECOMMENDATION:
If Council concurs, the action would be to approve the attached
Resolution and authorize the Mayor and City Manager to sign the grant
application for submission.
Attachments: Resolution No. _R_39_89City Manager Concurrence
Grant Application
Page 1 of Item No
