CITY OF COLTON
INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: Honorable Mayor Gonzales and City Council
FROM: Kenneth L. Peterso,General Services Manager
SUBJECT: Staff Report, Telephone Service
DATE
April 11, 1990
FILE NUMBER:
OFC
C~ -G*rTu
McovoMTEo
1687
9l10Rt
At the December 5, 1989 City Council meeting, there was an
agenda item approved which asked for the appropriation of funds
to provide expansion of our existing Dimension 400 telephone
system. This expansion was needed to provide for telephone
service at the new corporate yard and additional service for
Hutton and Luque Centers when the additions are completed.
The agenda item also asked for authority to pursue buying a
new telephone system and this was also approved.
On December 28, 1989, I prepared a staff report for the City
Manager, explaining the avenues I had pursued to provide for
the additional telephone service that was being required by
new construction. The best solution initially appeared to
be to purchase a new System 75 switch from A.T.&T. and replace
the aging Dimension 400 switch. It is a "state of the art"
switch with all the features we could possibly need. It did
require that we buy newer electronic telephones to replace
the 30 multibutton telephones now in use in City Hall and the
Police Department. I was initially told we could accomplish
this at a cost of $86,000.00 which was later reduced to
$60,000.00.
I actively pursued this alternative because of the attractive
cost for new equipment. However, when I asked them to explain
how the System 75 would support the off premise telephones
better than the Dimension 400, I was told that we would still
have the same problems off premise. They also advised that
they misunderstood my request and this option did nothing for
the new construction areas. To buy the new switch and support
just the corporate yard would really cost $215,000.00 minimum.
At this point, it was impossible to pursue buying a new system
and still support the corporate yard by the time it opened.
Staff determined it was best to support the new yard by
expanding the old system.
