\OMSE^AC0
N SC O/M
C
0-M,*,FICIAL RADIO
8 January 1990
Lt. Crowe
COLTON POLICE DEPARTMENT
650 North La Cadena Drive
Colton, CA 92324
Dear Lt. Crowe:
CWSERCO
882 North Main Street
Riverside, CA 92501
714/684-2080
In light of our recent discussidn, I could like to raise several issues
concerning the status of your communication's dispatch consoles. Your
consoles were installed in 1975, and are in use 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. Although you've enjoyed years of dependable service from
this equipment, we at COt9SERCO feel the time has come for you to consider
replacing this equipment.
COMSERCO has been providing radio maintenance service to the City of
Colton for a number of years. Although we have the technical expertise
and the test equipment necessary to service this equipment, other factors
are coming into play which will greatly influence our ability to maintain
your consoles to the degree that you expect and require. These factors
are:
PARTS AVAILABILITY - Nodular assemblies such as transmit and receive -
modules and comparator display modules are no longer available
for the Centra Com I Console. Although most components and some
sub -assemblies are still available, we may be very hard pressed
to return all console functions to service in the event of a major
module or board failure.
RELIABILITY - The Centra Com.I Console defined the "state of the
art" for dispatch equipment when it was introduced in 1974. However,
the Centra Com I utilizes mechanical switches and relays to accomplish
many of it's functions. These devices are prone to failure over
an extended length of time. Motorola established the useful, reliable
service life of the Centra Com I in the six to eight year range.
Obviously, use past this time will most probably translate to increased
equipment down time.
. .
OM MOTOROLA
Communkettons
