FOREWORD
The increasing flow of heavy-duty commercial vehicle traffic on California
highways in recent: years has focused more attention on the condition and
mechanical safety of those vehicles. The safe operation of commercial -type
trucks and buses, including those which are not operated commercially,
requires that those vehicles be well maintained and serviced on a regularl}
scheduled basis. For this reason, the regulations of the California Highway
Patrol (CHP) require that vehicles subject to its safety regulations be
maintained according to a preventive maintenance program, most of whish is the
responsibility of the individual motor carrier to establish.
The purpose of this guide is to provide motor carriers with a preventive
maintenance inspection guide pursuant to Section 2807.2 of the California
Vehicle Code, to provide assistance in, understanding the requirements of the
laws and regulations relating to vehicle maintenance, and to outline some
examples of programs that would comply with those requirements. The examples
shown in this guide are just that: examples. They are not to be construed as
the only acceptable maintenance schedules (except where specific inspection
schedules are spelled out in statute or regulation), and the record-keeping
methods shown are not the only possible means to meet the requirements
relating to that subject.
The objective of this guide is to improve the levels of motor carrier
compliance with applicable preventive maintenance laws and regulations.
Any questions or comments relating to this guide may be directed to the
California Highway Patrol, Enforcement Services Division, Commercial and
Technical Services Section, P. O. Box 942898, Sacramento., CA 94298-0001.
OFFICE OF THE COMH1SSIONER
DISTRIBUTION: S(Hol.ders of HPG 84.6)
ii HPG 84.6
