TO: HONORABLE MAYOR and CITY COUNCIL A
FOR: Council Meeting of 19 November 1991
FROM: Jaime R. Aguilera, Director of Community Development vv G
SUBJECT: Appeal of Planning Commission Decision -
File Index Number DS -42-91; Home Savings of America
E
BACKGROUND:
Although Home Savings of America is the applicant, the Council might better know this N
project as the Centrepointe Apartments at 1401 Santo Antonio Drive in the Cooley Ranch.
The applicant requested Planning Commission approval of a pole sign measuring thirty
(30) feet high and a per face square footage of 92 square feet. D
The applicant, represented by Gary Quiel of Quiel Bros. Signs, told the Commission the
reason for the pole sign request was to increase the economic viability of the apartment
complex. The other representative of Centrepointe was Arlene Thomas, the Assistant
Manager, who indicated that when the City forced them to remove an illegal pole sign, A
their business dropped by forty percent (40%)
The Commission agreed to allow the pole sign with the proviso that it be reduced in height
from thirty (30) feet to ten (10) feet. The Commission argued that this reduction still allowed
the sign to be seen from the southbound traffic, which is the only traffic that would have
an available off -ramp. R
The applicant apparently feels that ten (10) feet is not enough and has filed an appeal of
the Planning Commission decision. E
RECOMMENDATION:
The Planning Commission recommends denial of the applicant's appeal.
