SAN BERNARDINO
COMMUNITY COLLEGE CRAG O SBVC
hIL
DISTRICT COLLEGe
441 West 8th Street • San Bernardino, CA 92401-1007 • Ph. (714) 884-2533
August 27, 1991
Honorable Frank A. Gonzales
Mayor, City of Colton
650 North La Cadena
Colton, CA 92324
Dear Mayor Gonzales:
I am writing to request your endorsement of Measure "L" on the
November 5, 1991 ballot, which will provide bonds for the San
Bernardino Community College District. I have attached a copy of
the construction and renovations which would occur should this bond
pass. I firmly believe that this issue is deserving of your
support and of your constituents for the following reasons:
• The rising costs at UC and State Universities, added to the
dramatic growth predicted in the Inland Empire, will result in
thousands of additional students requesting services over the
next decade. The existing facilities at San Bernardino Valley
College and Crafton Hills College cannot presently accommodate
that growth.
• The federal government has turned its back on us for bricks
and mortar, and now the State of California is in the same
dire circumstances. If the Inland Empire is to move forward,
it is plainly clear that we must help ourselves.
• Many residents of our District have told me that with jobs
scarce in the Inland Empire, and with the street enticingly
beckoning, San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills
College are not only good choices, but the only hope for a
salutary future for our young people and many adults. Must we
shut our doors to these residents in coming years?
• Minorities are growing in numbers in our District. Our
community colleges are enrolling greater numbers of minorities
than any other segment of higher education in California and
in our District. Must we turn these minorities away because
of limited facilities?
