CHIEF UTILITY OPERATOR <br />DEFINITION <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />Under direction, to supervise and direct a crew that is engaged in the <br />operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of valves, mains, <br />meters and services; and to do other related work as required. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br />Schedules, assigns, supervises and directs the installation and repair <br />of water main sections, valves, fire hydrants, water meters and service <br />lines; meets with water superintendent to discuss work and assignments; <br />inspects work performed; investigates flow irregularities; may <br />participate in maintenance and operations work performing duties <br />similar to those of Serviceman II, such as meter repair or service <br />installation; supervises chlorination of water system; takes water <br />samples; enforces safety procedures; confers with contractors to <br />determine service locations; requisitions material and keeps records <br />pertaining to materials, tools and equipment; prepares daily work <br />orders, time sheets and other reports as required; participates in an <br />emergency standby program. <br />LICENSE REQUIRED <br />A valid and appropriate California Driver's License. <br />Possession of a valid American Water Works Association Grade I Water <br />Distribution Operator Certificate. <br />Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid American Water Works <br />Association Grade II Water Distribution Operator Certificate within 18 <br />months in this classification. <br />UALIFICATIONS <br />Knowledge of• <br />Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the <br />installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution <br />facilities; <br />Principles of water metering; <br />Relevant safety precautions and procedures. <br />Ability to• <br />Repair, install and maintain water mains, services, valves, and <br />meters. <br />Plan and lay out a work program, including the estimation of <br />costs. <br />Maintain records. <br />Read engineering drawings relating to construction and maintenance <br />work. <br />
