13 <br />14 <br />15 <br />16 <br />17 <br />18 <br />19 <br />20 <br />21 <br />22 <br />23 <br />24 <br />2511 <br />261 i <br />2i <br />281 <br />1 <br />r <br />Y <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF <br />THE CITY OF COLTON ADOPTING A ZERO <br />TOLERANCE GUN POLICY <br />WHEREAS, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors will <br />be adopting a "Zero Tolerance Gun Policy" as a <br />statement of the County's growing concern over the <br />rise in gun violence, and the need for strong and <br />decisive action; and, <br />WHEREAS, this policy is requesting the cooperation of the <br />Sheriff, District Attorney, Chief Probation Officer <br />and City Government and Police Departments across <br />the County to impose strict arrest and prosecutory <br />standards on anyone arrested and convicted of <br />illegal possession of a gun; and, <br />WHEREAS, the City Council agrees with the get -tough policy <br />for stricter sentencing and sanctions for those who <br />use guns in illegal activities, and the City of <br />Colton declares a "zero -tolerance for illegal gun <br />Possession within the City of Colton, and will <br />cooperate with San Bernardino County and any other <br />agencies within the County of San Bernardino in <br />implementing this policy; and <br />WHEREAS, while it is important to stop the flow of illegal <br />weapons into this City and into the County,.we <br />recognize the tremendous numbers of firearms already <br />in public circulation; it is estimated by Congres- <br />sional researchers that there are almost 560,000 <br />privately -owned guns in California alone; and, <br />WHEREAS, we don't want to prevent legitimately maintained <br />weapons in homes and on private property for pro- <br />tection, however, we can take strong action against <br />those who will bring guns illegally into the public <br />places of commerce, institutions or recreation. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, it is asked that this Council approve the <br />following policy: <br />It shall be the policy of the City Council of the <br />City of Colton.that illegal firearms possession will <br />not be tolerated to any degree within this City. It <br />is the intention of this Council that all offenders <br />be deprived of their unrestricted freedom for a <br />specific time and under specified conditions. We <br />believe that the incarcerations, whether actual or <br />custodial, will serve as a major deterrent to the <br />widespread gun violence we are experiencing. This <br />
