CITY OF COLTON <br />GENERAL CLERK <br />DEFINITION <br />Under supervision, performs a wide variety of clerical work of average difficulty. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS <br />Positions in this class are filled on a temporary and/or part-time basis. A General Clerk <br />works under supervision and within a framework of established procedures. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: <br />Type; look up information for public or departmental use; maintain various files; receive and <br />open mail; answer telephones; compile, tabulate, check, and type statistical data; receive the <br />public and handle routine business or refer to appropriate person; operate standard office <br />machines; perform other related duties, as required. <br />QUALIFICATIONS <br />Knowledge of: <br />Modern office terminology, procedures and equipment; <br />Basic arithmetic; <br />Basic elements of good English usage and spelling; <br />Bilingual (English/Spanish) desirable. <br />Ability to: <br />Type accurately from clear copy at a rate of 35 works per minute; <br />Maintain records; <br />Note and correct errors in grammar, spelling and format; <br />Understand and follow oral and written instructions; <br />Operate office machines; <br />Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work. <br />EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION - Any combination of experience and education that <br />would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to <br />obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: <br />Experience: <br />One year of general clerical experience. <br />Education: <br />High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in <br />typing and office practices. <br />WD:GENCLRK <br />
