CITY OF COLTON EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II DEFINITION: Under the general supervision of the Public Services Supervisor or higher level supervisory personnel, performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Equipment Operator series including operating a variety of heavy equipment including a street sweeper, tractor-trailer, and backhoe; assists other maintenance personnel in the performance of general maintenance duties; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assists in the training of lower level Equipment Operator positions; performs a variety of other tasks in support of assigned area of responsibility. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Equipment Operator II is the journey level class within the Equipment Operator series and is responsible for operating the full range of heavy equipment. Typically, however, incumbents within this classification are responsible for operating street sweeping equipment. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Equipment Operator I by the performance of more complex and responsible duties, which includes the operation of street sweeping equipment and in that it requires a class A license. Note: Incumbents in this classification are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of the Department of Transportation. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May occasionally exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level maintenance staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) • Perform the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Equipment Operator series and operate the full range of heavy equipment including a street sweeper. • Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties. • Operate construction and maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, skip loaders, rollers, graders, boom trucks, tractor-trailers, crane truck, forklifts and various other equipment for a variety of maintenance and construction purposes. • Clean debris from ditches and other areas as necessary. • Perform a variety of other construction and maintenance tasks such as driving a truck, resurfacing roads and clearing brush from the right-of-way. • Identify equipment needs for assigned projects; pickup and deliver equipment from construction and maintenance sites as necessary. • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites. • Perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment including changing brushes on sweepers and performing pre and post operation inspections. • Clean and maintain streets, alleys, sidewalks and ditches.
